Wrist Corsage in Milk Chocolate, Pinks and Salmon

These are some of my new crocheted cuffs - this one has a soft silky flower, silk yarns in creme and deep pinks. The base is a milk chocolate color with a pretty wooden button holding it closed. This works great with that little black dress or faded jeans. It is a Wrist Corsage that doesn't die. Yes, if you get spaghetti sauce on it you can hand wash it in gentle soap, rinse carefully and hang up to air dry. You might need to fluff up the flower after! I love yarn. In college I learned how to weave on giant lovely old looms and I quickly realized that it wasn't the weaving I like, but just handling the yarn. Counting and marking rows make me crazy and while free form pieces were exciting and seemed to have endless possibilities. On a piece that you had to figure it all out on paper first down to each stitch- the fun part was over for me. While working freeform and not really knowing how the story would end was wayyyyy more fun. I have come across cuffs, bracelets made of leather, fabric, and fibers- loved the look. My stash of yarn is quite extensive to say the least - and I have wonderful finds from the thrift stores and antique stores like old charms, buttons, cool stuff. All of these are finding their way into my Wrist Corsages - pastel country, hippy, feathers & silk, and even wedding pieces. New ones have just been posted on my etsy site so check them out when you have a chance.

Metal Heart & Lock Necklace

A fun little piece made from found objects and a couple special pieces. The metal heart image is faded, and the key is old and worn. The little brass discs came off of a belly dancing skirt (don't tell me you don't have one hidden away in your closet), and the little red beads just seemed to set it off.

I get bored easily. Sometimes that can be a problem, but other times good things come out of it. To break up the sewing time, I started to do more crocheting. After finding some incredibly beautiful yarn of silk and cottons on a trip to Sedona and Cottonwood, I was inspired to work in fibers again. I started crocheting, and then tried crocheting without a hook but with my fingers. That lead to attempting to add some beads - which lead to this textured silk & cotton necklace mixed with glass beads and sterling silver clasps.Silk and cotton yarns in mint green and pink are intertwined with green and deep purple glass beads in this 27” necklace. The beads are various sizes of glass, quartz, and ceramic. It is multistranded with all the strands intertwined. The strands all meet at the silver clasp in the back. Sedona Colors- WinterVention

Winter- Vention
Winter in Sedona, Arizona is always beautiful. The sycamore trees are bare, the branches are white and give a soft blur of lines in the skys. I love it. This view is from the bridge that crosses Oak Creek canyon looking northeast. The colorful rocks show through the branches of the tree. This is the color scheme I am using for some necklaces I am creating for my shop on Etsy. Just taking the softness, the salmon, creme, greys, blues and working with them to work together as well as they do in this photo.
Deadline for having them ready to put in the shop is February 7th for some new pieces and I am excited.

Giant, Throw it All in Bag

Here is the bag that could serve so many purposes. Laundry, baby toys, beach, gym, dance class, or just in the car. It is large and unlined to keep it lightweight. I figure you will load it up all by yourself. It has a little metal hook for your keys so they don't get lost down in the bottom of this thing! There are 6 pockets on the outside and one on the inside. Totally washable, hang to dry. The top edges are all frayed out since they once were the bottom of some old bell bottom pants. Yes, faded and old denim but very durable.

Rescued Yarn

What a find at Goodwill in Tempe! I needed fabric with black & white and found two swirly skirts of jersey knit. One had B & W plus a shot of pink, perfect! Jersey makes a great lining. The totes were crocheted out of rescued yarn and the skirts were put to good use.
I really enjoy crocheting- never could knit. I just didn't have the patience and it was not forgiving enough for me. When you have to knit backwards to remove mistakes- well- that blew the whole deal for me. With crochet you just pull the yarn and out the stitches go. That's more my style. If you would like to learn to crochet there is a great little website called www.crochetme.com . You sign up as a member-it is very easy. I have never received any spam just free patterns.

I only recently learned that yoga types really like to have something to store and carry their yoga mats in. And, that they often like it that others can tell they are in yoga. My daughter really enjoys yoga and I got her a new taupe colored mat for her workouts. When I saw these jeans with the richly embellished pant legs I knew that my daughter would never wear them, but she would probably like them as a yoga bag. Hit the jackpot- it turned out great. Textures, lace, patched, all good!

My sewing room floor is covered in wonderful colors of pinks, yellows, and turquise- pulling together ideas for spring bags and accessories. Things to watch for? Soft fiber necklaces, crocheted bags in spring colors and more.

While out shopping I am always checking out the new clothing coming out and hoping for something really nice. While in California I saw so much layering of real different weights and colors of fabrics. This can be tricky to sew as I found out trying to make an upcycled sweater into a jacket with patches of different fabrics. Putting great looking fabrics together wasn't the hard part, it's getting the pieces to not be too heavy and bulky. After making a bit of a mess of this little sweater I cut it all up into pieces and now am sewing it back together completely different. IF it works out I will post it and see what viewers think. If more likes than not I will start creating more.

Handdyed Yarns, Foggy Cottonwood, Az

Don't you just love the rain, fog and cold? While up north for a couple of days of painting I headed over to the little town of Cottonwood. Their downtown historic section is so fun to shop. Antique store, cigar shop, pubs, little cafes- all with their doorways along the sidewalk. One great find was a shop, Alley Cat Co-op, full of antiques and best of all, beautiful hand dyed yarns. What a treasure trove of colors, and textures. Of course I came home with some beauties. These yarns along with some vintage buttons, natural pearls, little charms all strung together to make long soft necklaces. These will be coming out in January on my Etsy site so watch for them.

Black Denim with Turquoise Accents

This little black bag is made from a beat up pair of black jeans. The inside is fully lined with a black & white print. There are small pieces of turquoise leather and little buttons sewn on the corners. The purse actually started with the chain. I found this nice chain and no one in my home claimed it (too late now if it was yours) and I thought it would make a great strap for a bag. The old jeans were torn, but not in a cool way, so I cut that part off and used the top portion. It falls real nice down about hip level and can be worn across the body as a messenger bag.

Embellished Gold Evening Bag

Just finished a couple of little gold evening bags made out of some richly gold colored tapestry pieces. One bag is a little clutch, pretty enough to set on the table beside you at a formal dinner. The other purse hangs down from an antique gold chain and is designed with an angular shape. Each bag has Swarovski crystals sewn onto it at the clasp. There is chenille yarn woven in and out of the gold chain. Both have enough room for your ID, keys, lipstick and a phone. I figured that I always like to have a really beautiful purse when dressed to the nines- and you probably do also.

Special Requests- Commissions for All Used Up

Special requests are a fun challenge. A girlfriend of mine wanted the perfect gift for a special friend of hers. This gal loves anything Wrangler, so I used the labels and tags off a pair of Wrangler pants. Then I added some cute cotton fabric with a cowboy pattern.
This gal loves turquoise, so I stitched on some small patches of leather rich in color. The strap came from the front of a western style dress. Using the lapel and taking advantage of the great pearl snaps makes the strap adjustable. The purse is hand washable. It will fade and get more ragged, but no worries; it is sewn together with double stitching.

My next special project is creating a Jonas Brothers themed bag! I will post that one when it is all pulled together.

I hit the thrift stores in every town I visit. I make fairly regular trips to Sedona, mostly to paint the incredible scenes there. On my last visit, I stopped into Sedona's Goodwill store. A friend of mine requested a special bag with a decidedly western feel she will use as a gift. This denim dress has wonderful lapels and stitching on the shoulders. First I had to remove the huge shoulder pads. Ugh! I have to admit I wore those in the 80's. On occasion I will make a custom bag with a theme. When this special bag is ready I will post it so you can see what happened to these shoulders!

Denim Yoga Mat Bag

My yoga mat was held up in a roll with a piece of elastic. Not very handy, nor attractive. When a skinny-legged pair of jeans showed up on my sewing table, I knew just what to do with them.

Here is a yoga bag that is loose and large with a drawstring top. There is room for shoes, a towel and your mat. With a large pocket on the outside, you can store your phone and keys while in class. The patched cotton fabrics and sturdy denim are washable.

Now I need to make a bag that is a little more plain and simple, because I can't see my son using this one.

Denim iPad Case

iPads are so cool. They do amazing things, but those lovely screens can get damaged. This pouch is made of soft denim with a micro-fleece inside. There is a pocket on the outside from the backside of a pair of jeans. The denim is worn and very soft. The edges are left ragged but very sturdy. Bonanza Find- Red leather Chaps in Victor, Colorado

Ok, I know I said I look for jeans and leather jackets, but did I ever hit the gold mine in Victor, Colorado this summer. We were there for an art event called Victor Celebrates the Arts. I was one of the artists painting in the event. But of course I am hitting the thrift stores, antique stores, and weird little shops.
This shop was a real mix of items. They had old, but not valuable stuff right next to very expensive pieces of Hopi and Navajo jewelry. Victor is a great example of a gold mine town that still has the old mines, old buildings, and the feel of the true west. Those attributes seems to bring in the bikers; the Harley riders from all over the country. That is how these red leather chaps ended up in this shop and now find their way to my sewing table.
They were huge, someone definitely made a strong statement wearing these. Yikes! Scary thought. Keep watch, because this lovely soft red leather will be showing up soon as new bags for AUU.

Thrift Store Shopping in Woodland, Colorado

On trips I like to check out thrift stores and Goodwills. It is like going on a hunt for cool fabrics. I look for denim jeans with all kinds of embellishments, or something that makes them stand out. I also look for denim skirts and long dresses, especially in the real large sizes, which give me more fabric..

While in Woodland Colorado this summer I ran across this little shop. It was so nice inside; Well laid out and very clean. It was obvious that the merchandise was carefully selected. They did not sell just anything. Of course that means the prices are a bit higher, but for something extra special, it would be worth it. And it was! I found some great jeans that were covered with heavy embroidery, faded patterns, and unusual buttons. Some had silk screened patterns of leaves. I plan to cut them up, taking a pocket here and a leg there, mixing denims till I get a look I want.

This little bag was made from the end of a pant leg off of a wayyyyy too worn out pair of jeans. We all love wearing super soft worn out denim jeans but when those around you are learning way more about you than they should, it's time to give those pants up! On this bag there is a soft fuzzy fringe stitched across the bottom and the handle is a long strip of crocheted yarn in a soft faded pink. Washable, of course and versatile, of course!

Big girl And Little Girl Bags

All girls love bags and we never have enough. Even little girls! Here is Penny with her little gal bag made from the leg from a size 4 pair of pants. The strap is short so she can't get it over her head. I have posted several other purses made with longer straps for older girls. These are all washable so you can remove the melted crayons. My studio is in Arizona and we are quite used to everything melting in our purses.

Katie's shoulder bag is simple and just the right size to hold the basics. It is embellished with hand crocheted flowers and patched with cotton fabrics. The crocheted strap can be tied up short or worn as a sling bag.

Looking to get rid of some items from my thrift store stash, I found a pair of creme-colored shorts with giant pockets. The fabric is durable yet lightweight, and of course washable. I made this bag using one leg of those shorts with the pocket as-is. There is a draw-string top so it's easy to stuff in a towel, shoes, sunblock, or your gym stuff. Even if this bag takes a beating under the car seat you can pop it in the washer. No crazy fabric on this one; Very simple and practical.

Victorian Bag - Vintage Lace

As the first bags were being pulled together on my sewing table, I started to notice that they were all my favorite colors, and they all my favorite styles. Since I wasn't planning on buying my own bags, I figured I had better branch out to some new styles. That's why I make my bags with a friend in mind, and try to reflect her style. That really made it more fun for me, and gives each bag its own personality.

Denim Hippy Boho Bag

This whole bag thing got started because I wanted to make a cool purse for one of my girls, Katie. She is a free spirit. She's very busy, and usually has everything she needs for the day in her purse. After playing around with some old jeans I made up a bag that really fits her personality.

I use every part of a pair of jeans when making my bags, including the zipper. Sometimes I cut up the pants and resew them together to create one large piece of fabric. Other times I leave the jeans nearly intact, and sew on additions and linings, or create straps.

My fabric stash has all sorts of nice stuff collected through the years. I use bits and pieces to embellish the bags, pulling colors together that seem to work. Doing it this way guarantees no two purses will be the same.

This particular bag is the perfect hands-free choice for ballgames, shopping, or school. The soft mauve crocheted strap is adjustable for over-the-shoulder or messenger style. Denim & Plaid Flannel

While sitting at a red light near McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona, I noticed that half of the girls had some sort of plaid on. I knew it was popular but didn't realize how much.

After some searching, I did find several nice plaid shirts at Goodwill, cast away because of small rips, ugly buttons, or other imperfections. No worries for me; They are now complimenting my denim bags.

One pair of worn out jeans and lovely quilt scraps are all I needed to make this bag. It has a flat bottom and is sturdy enough to carry books, with room for extra stuff.

I have so many beautiful fabrics that had been used in quilts I made through the years. Of course, no piece of fabric is too small to keep... which is why I need to use them up! It's a lot of fun to pull together the colors I need for just the right look.

Soft Denim Messenger Bag

The hard part about making my bags is I really want to keep each one of them. I have learned to make each bag with with someone in mind. I'll think about a friend of mine, and tailor it to what I think she would like. It helps reduce my separation anxiety.

I really like this little bag. It is shaped like an envelope. It has pockets for your phone and room for stuff. The flap came from the bottom edge of an old 90's denim skirt I still had in my closet. A very unflattering style on me, but as a bag it works.

Army Green Weekend Bag

This canvas weekend bag started out as a jumper. I found it at Goodwill in Tempe, Arizona and loved it. At first I bought it for myself, then it hit me what a cool bag it would make. The shoulder straps from the jumper are now the straps of the bag, and the big back pockets are on the sides. The army green is so popular this fall. It is unlined and lightweight and is washable. You could easily pack up for a weekend away or use it as an airline carry-on.

So now I still don't have an army green jumper for myself... I'll keep looking.

Black, White & Turquoise

This messenger bag came from a pair of faded jeans and part of a denim skirt. The black, white & turquoise fabric is a reproduction of a popular 60's print. There are small ribbon embellishments to bring out the turquoise.

Creating a strap that was adjustable and lightweight was a challenge; My design solution is a hand-crocheted strip. It can be tied up short, or attached to the buttons on the side. The straps are adjustable so you can hang the bag off your shoulder or wear it sling style.

The design for this bag came from a request for a simple, durable, washable and cute daily bag. The seams are left ragged but sewn very strong. The more this bag is used the more faded and ragged it becomes; Just like your favorite jeans! It can be hand washed and hung to dry, just in case your sunblock leaks out.
